Who writes this — and how these guides are made

Benjamin Marcel Farmer
I live and work in Seebruck am Chiemgau, Bavaria. Every week I coach international professionals — engineers, physicians, finance people — in Business German and in the practical side of building a career in Germany. SettleWell exists because my students kept running into the same walls: Anmeldung, recognition, insurance, housing. The answers were scattered or wrong, so I started writing them down properly.
I am also a licensed insurance broker under § 34d Abs. 1 GewO (register no. D-JVL9-5PHSL-51, supervised by the IHK für München und Oberbayern) — which is why the insurance guides here are written by someone who is actually accountable to a regulator for getting them right.
The editorial standard behind every guide
These guides cover topics where a wrong number costs real people real months. That is why every guide goes through the same fixed process before it is published:
- 1
Every figure is verified before publishing
Deadlines, fees, salary thresholds and paragraph references are checked against live official sources — never written from memory. Each guide lists its sources and carries a visible facts-as-of date.
- 2
Statutes first, blogs last
For anything involving residence law or legal procedures, we read the current text of the law at gesetze-im-internet.de before we trust any secondary source. Guides and agency websites survive law changes for years; the statute text does not.
- 3
Reviewed on a schedule
Every guide is re-checked at least every six months. Figures that change annually — Blue Card salary thresholds, insurance contribution ceilings, blocked-account amounts — are additionally reviewed every January.
- 4
Corrections are published, not hidden
Example: on 2 August 2026 we found that one of our own guides still described the old § 20 job-seeker visa, a route Germany abolished in June 2024. It was rewritten and redeployed the same day. If you spot an error, tell us — it will be fixed.
- 5
No invented stories, ever
You will not find made-up case studies, fake testimonials or fabricated experiences here. Where a guide is precise, it is because the process was researched properly — not because we invented a character who went through it.
- 6
An honest no is part of the service
If a route does not work for your profile, the guides and checkers say so — with what is missing and how to close the gap. A clear no now beats a wasted year.
How SettleWell makes money
The guides and checkers are free, with no sign-up. They stay free.
Placement is free for candidates. If we connect you with a German employer and it leads to a contract, the employer pays our fee — you never do. German law (§ 296 SGB III) tightly restricts what anyone may charge a job seeker; our model stays deliberately outside of it.
Insurance advice is a separate, regulated service. As a licensed broker I work with more than 60 insurers. Where a question needs a lawyer or a tax adviser, it goes to cooperating professionals — we do not give legal or tax advice.
